ALISON MURDOCH SET TO DEFEND TITLE AT ROYALE CANADIAN WOMEN’S SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

ST. JOHN’S, NFLD. (August 22, 2008) – Defending champion Alison Murdoch of Victoria, B.C. headlines an experienced field of competitors featuring all 10 provincial champions as the 2008 Royale Canadian Women’s Senior Championship prepares to get underway August 25-28, at Bally Haly Golf and Curling Club in St. John’s Nfld.

With her first Senior’s win coming in 2002, Murdoch claimed her fourth title last year, tying the records of Gayle Borthwick of Mississauga, Ont. and Canadian Golf Hall of Fame member, Marlene Stewart Streit of Unionville, Ont.  A fifth title would place Murdoch at the top with the most individual wins at the Royale Canadian Women’s Senior Championship.

Other top B.C. competitors include 2003 Canadian senior champion Lynda Palahniuk of Kelowna, B.C., 2008 B.C. senior and mid-amateur women’s champion Jackie Little of Port Alberni, B.C.., as well as 2006 and 2007 B.C. senior women’s champion Holly Horwood of Vancouver and 2003 B.C. senior women’s champion Phyllis Laschuk.

In addition to competing for the Ada Mackenzie Trophy, competitors will vie for the Royale Cup Champions Trophy. This commemorative trophy honours each of the three women’s Canadian amateur champions (junior, amateur and senior) crowned each season by the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA).

As an added bonus, the winner of the championship will receive a coveted exemption to play at the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship held September 12-17 at Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.

In Inter-provincial team play, British Columbia team members Jackie Little, Lynda Palahniuk, Elaine Blatchford and Phyllis Laschuk will be looking to defend their title as provincial champions. B.C. has won this title 12 times prior and is looking for lucky 13.

Conducted since 1971, the Canadian Senior Women’s Championship has featured many of the country’s top senior golfers. Canadian Golf Hall of Fame members, Marlene Streit, Gayle Borthwick, Marilyn O’Connor and Margaret Todd all own senior titles. Bally Haly Golf and Curling Club last played host to this championship in 1983.

SooBin Kim of Port Coquitlam, B.C. and Stacey Keating of Victoria, Australia, have already etched their names on the Royale Cup Champions Trophy earlier this month by claiming the junior and amateur championships respectively.

The Royale Canadian Women’s Senior Championship is contested over three rounds of stroke play (54-holes). The field is open to 156 players who have reached the age of 50 by August 26, 2008. An Inter-provincial Team Championship will also take place in conjunction with the first two rounds of stroke play.

The RCGA will name a Super Senior Champion at the conclusion of the event for the second time in tournament history. This recognition will go to the competitor who achieves the low total score during the three days of competition and is at least 60 years of age. Last year Pamela Williamson of Edinburgh, Scotland took home the trophy with a final round of 78 and tournament-total 25 over 238.

Practice rounds will be held Monday, August 25. Championship play will be conducted Tuesday, August 26 through Thursday, August 28 with 18 holes of stroke play each day. Any tie after 54 holes will result in a sudden-death playoff.
